Our Plants

We design, build and operate plants to transform waste into a resource.

01

Ginestreto Landfills

Four landfills, one of which is operational, a single commitment: to ensure the safe and responsible management of non-recoverable waste by creating an integrated system capable of generating energy.
Capacity: 210,000 tonnes/year (maximum authorised quantity)

Ginestreto Landfill Complex
The Ginestreto Landfill complex comprises four facilities for the final disposal of non-hazardous waste: G1 and G2, which are closed and in the post-closure phase; G4, which is currently operational; and G3, which is due to be built. This is also the final destination for the bottom ash and non-recoverable waste produced by the other facilities at the Integrated Complex, within a system that uses the stockpiled waste to generate electricity and heat through biogas recovery.

G3: the future of the Ginestreto Complex
Ginestreto 3 is the main industrial investment by Sogliano Ambiente for the coming years and completes the overall site development project. The Emilia-Romagna Region approved the project in December 2025, and the company opened the construction site as early as January 2026. Work is proceeding according to schedule, with completion expected in 2028.
G3 is a strategic asset for the regional waste management system. It will ensure operational continuity for the Complex and provide the logistical efficiency required to support the local and national manufacturing sector. It will also close the circularity loop for the portion of waste that cannot be recovered.

Capacity and technology
– Capacity: 210,000 tonnes/year (maximum authorised quantity)
– Biogas capture via drainage trenches, with energy recovery in internal combustion engines
– On-site leachate treatment plant, with heat recovery from combustion flue gases to power the purification process
– Daily covering of waste with sub-standard compost, which is thus recovered

Certifications
– ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2023
– EMAS registration

Key figures

  • 6,757,082 tonnes of waste processed from 1990 to 2025 (disposal and recovery)
  • ~360,000,000 cubic metres of biogas produced and recovered
  • 565,425,000 kWh of electricity produced in total
  • Treated or recirculated leachate: from 60% (2014) to 90% of the total produced today
  • 218,000 tonnes of waste managed in 2025 alone across the entire Complex, with 44% sent for recovery

The management process
The service involves the delivery of waste to the unloading area by dedicated vehicles. The material is then compacted by specialist staff and, at the end of the day’s operations, covered with sub-standard compost to ensure proper management. As cultivation progresses, drainage trenches are also dug to enable the collection of biogas. The collected biogas powers internal combustion engines to generate electricity, whilst leachate is channelled to and treated within the dedicated treatment plant.

Sorting and Recovery Plant

Every recoverable material is a new opportunity. Paper, cardboard, plastic, wood, metals and glass are sorted and transformed into new raw materials, ready to re-enter the production cycle as ‘End of Waste’.

Capacity: 40,000 t/year (maximum authorised quantity)

The Sorting and Recovery Plant processes non-putrescible and non-hazardous waste through mechanical and manual sorting of incoming streams, separating and recovering each recyclable fraction (paper and cardboard, plastic, wood, metals, glass) to reintroduce it as a raw material into production cycles.

Capacity and technology

  • Capacity: 40,000 t/year (maximum authorised quantity)
  • Sorting using machinery and a manual sorting line
  • Removable containers (bins and electric compactors) made available to customers for the storage of waste, whether mixed or already sorted
  • Recovery operations R3, R12, R13
  • Roof-mounted photovoltaic system for the generation of electricity

Certifications

  • ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2023

Key figures

  • 33,964 tonnes of waste received at the plant
  • 48% sent for material recycling — 16,385 tonnes recovered
  • 7% sent for energy recovery — 2,376 tonnes
  • 15,120 tonnes of residual waste sent to landfill
  • Composition of recovered materials: paper and cardboard 47%, screening sand 18%, wood 16%, plastic 12%, metals 4%, glass 3.4%

The management process

  • Delivery of roll-off containers to customers for the storage of their waste
  • Collection and replacement of containers once full
  • Inspection and sorting of incoming waste, both mechanical and manual
  • Separation and recovery of individual waste fractions
  • Direct delivery to paper mills of paper and cardboard recovered as end-of-life (EoW) materials
  • Forwarding of the sorted and recovered waste to authorised third-party facilities for treatment and final recovery

Stabilisation Plant

This is where organic matter changes form and value.

Compost and energy are produced from waste, initiating a process that returns resources to the territory and helps make our circular economy model a reality.

Capacity: 50,000 t/year (maximum authorised quantity)

The Stabilisation Plant treats biodegradable organic waste – kitchen and canteen waste, grass clippings and prunings – through anaerobic digestion and subsequent aerobic maturation, providing the local area with compost and electricity generated from biogas.

Capacity and technology

  • Capacity: 50,000 t/year (maximum authorised quantity)
  • Anaerobic digestion in dedicated digesters, producing methane-rich biogas
  • Internal combustion engines connected to generators for the production of electricity
  • Aerobic tunnels with temperature and oxygen control for the maturation of the organic fraction
  • Screening to remove impurities and maturation in dedicated yards
  • 717 kW photovoltaic plant, 999 kW combined heat and power plant, leachate treatment plant

Certifications

  • ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, ISO 45001:2023
  • EMAS registration

Key figures

  • ~40,000 t/year of organic waste treated on average (42,327 t in 2024)
